JACKSON, Tenn. -  As part of the Jackson-Madison County Library’s NEA Big Read program, the community is invited to a free performance by the Tennessee Shakespeare Company at 6:30 pm at Community Montessori School on Thurs., Oct. 26.

Shake(s), Rattle & Roll is a family-friendly, fast-paced 45-minute show that creatively links Memphis music that came out of Stax Recording Studios and Sun Studios in the 50s and 60s to the works of Shakespeare.  The production features Jillian Barron and Zach Williams in this musical performance directed by Stephanie Shine.

Community Montessori School is located at 716 Westwood Ave. in Jackson. The show will be performed in the Tigrett Auditorium. Admission is free and no tickets are required.

As part of the Jackson-Madison County Library’s NEA Big Read program, the community is invited to Jackson’s first Shakespeare in the Park, with four free performances of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) [Revised] Oct. 19 - 22.

The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) [Revised] will be performed outdoors Oct. 19 – 22, with three evening shows at 7:30 pm in the courtyard at The Suites of Larue Oct. 19 – 21 and a 3 pm show at The Amp on Sun., Oct. 22.

The Suites of Larue are located at 416 E. Lafayette St. in downtown Jackson. Parking is available in both a lot across the street, as well as a lot on the east side of the Jackson-Madison County Library at the intersection of E. Lafayette and Royal. The Jackson-Madison County Library to Kick Off The Big Read

Community Invited to Participate in Two Months of Special Events

JACKSON, Tenn. -  The Jackson-Madison County Library will kick off two months of special events and programs at 11 am on Sat., Sept. 9 at the Main Library as part of The Big Read, a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest that aims to inspire conversation and discovery through the joy of sharing a good book. 

The Big Read in the Jackson-Madison County area will focus on the novel Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel, with weekly activities and events taking place throughout September and October. In Station Eleven, Chapter 6 begins with the phrase, "An Incomplete List:" and what follows is a beautiful yet haunting description of what no longer exists after the collapse, both the everyday and the extraordinary. The final paragraph in this chapter describes our current relationship with the Internet and social media:

No more Internet. No more social media, no more scrolling through litanies of dreams and nervous hopes and photographs of lunches, cries for help and expressions of contentment and relationship-status updates with heart icons whole or broken, plans to meet up later, pleas, complaints, desires, pictures of babies dressed as bears or peppers for Halloween. An initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest, the NEA Big Read broadens our understanding of our world, our communities, and ourselves through the joy of sharing a good book. The NEA Big Read showcases a diverse range of contemporary titles that reflect many different voices and perspectives, aiming to inspire conversation and discovery.
